Since 2014 Blitz volunteers have built 349 gardens in our community. The Green Bay Garden Blitz empowers Green Bay residents to grow food and be part of a sustainable, urban agricultural system. We provide a comprehensive approach to urban agriculture by selling and installing raised bed gardens at a low cost and by providing education and mentorship for gardeners. The garden boxes are installed over the course of one weekend (May 5, 6, 7th in 2017) by our team of volunteers. In addition to their garden boxes, new gardeners have a variety of educational opportunities, including our mentor program, which matches veteran gardeners with new growers. Our team also provided seeds and educational booklets to our gardeners.
WE SURPASSED OUR GOAL OF 100 BOXES IN 2016.
122 volunteers installed 108 garden boxes in 2016, making a total of 349 Blitz gardens installed in the Green Bay area since 2014. We have installed over 95 of these gardens with social agencies that serve low-income populations, educational institutions, libraries, schools, and low-income individuals including: Boys & Girls Club, Veteran’s Manor, UWGB, Brown County Library’s Children’s Garden, Manna For Life Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen, Golden House, Clarity Care, NeighborWorks, low-income housing sites and 16 local elementary and high schools.
The Green Bay Garden Blitz is a project of New Leaf Foods and the Brown County UW-Extension.The Green Bay Garden Blitz was inspired by the Victory Garden Initiative in Milwaukee.
We are looking for volunteers for our 2017 Planning Team. If you have a passion for urban gardening and a matching skillset to any of our positions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
